City police launch WhatsApp helpline

The city police have launched a WhatsApp service for reporting crimes, emergency or law and order situations and information on criminals or their whereabouts. Officials said that anyone can report a crime on two mobile numbers launched by the police on Thursday by sending messages on WhatsApp. The Whatsapp messages on these two numbers will be under constant observation of police control room staff. Officials said that it will help police respond to any crime-related information in real time.

Commissioner Srinivas Rao said that two mobile numbers - 8764868100 and 8764868200 are operational from new year.

"These numbers can be used for reporting any type of crime.

A city resident can send a message on WhatsApp if he or she is in an emergency situation. Women can report an incident of harassment.

Residents can also provide information if they come to know about the presence of a known criminal in their area. These numbers will also help us improve the law and order situation," said the officer.

The officer added that the residents can also share footages, the details of the crime and the spot where it's taking place.

"The identity of the informer will be kept secret on request," additional commissioner of police Bipin K Pandey said.

DGP Omendra Bhardwaj said that similar services have been started in Jodhpur and Kota also. "The number for Jodhpur police commissionerate for sending WhatsApp messages to the police is 9530440800 and for Kota it is 9468800005," said the DGP.

The DGP said that the WhatAapp service will particularly go a long way in ensuring women's safety and ensure quick response to information related to atrocities against women.
