Uber cuts fares by up to 40% in India

Taxi-hailing app Uber has reduced its fare by up to 40% across its three cab categories - uberGO, uberX and UberBLACK in all Indian major cities it operates barring Kolkata.

Following the cut, in Delhi UberGO tariff will be Rs 7/Km, UberX at Rs 9/Km and UberBLACK will cost Rs 12/Km. The base fare for the three is now Rs 25, Rs 40 and Rs 0, respectively while the minimum fare is Rs 50, Rs 80 and Rs 100, respectively. The per minute charge is Rs 1 for GO and X and Rs 1.5 for BLACK.

In Mumbai UberGO tariff will be Rs 8/Km, UberX at Rs 10/Km and UberBLACK will cost Rs 13/Km. The minimum fare is Rs 60, Rs 100 and Rs 150, respectively. Similarly, in Bengaluru, UberGO tariff will be Rs 7/Km, UberX at Rs 8/Km and UberBLACK will cost Rs 13/Km. The minimum fare is Rs 50, Rs 75 and Rs 120, respectively.
The tariff cut comes more than a month after Uber resumed services in New Delhi. The company is doing its bit to win back Delhi users' confidence. It had sent an email to users announcing its return and detailing the extra measures it had taken to ensure passenger safety. It said it was also conducting workshops for drivers on being courteous to especially female passengers.

According to a new report by ET, the Delhi transport department has started consultation with the central government to block the internet address of Uber if the San Francisco-based company does not obtain a radio taxi licence to ply its cabs in the national capital.

Uber and other taxi hailing app companies were banned from operating in Delhi after the alleged rape of a passenger by a driver on the Uber network in December 2014. Subsequently, the transport department modified radio taxi laws and directed Uber and rivals OlaCabs and Taxiforsure to obtain licences to operate legally in the city. Uber, however, terms itself as a technology company and not a transport provider, has been demanding that it be regulated under the Information Technology Act.
