WhatsApp working on online chat backups via Google Drive: Report

If you change your smartphone frequently (just like us phone reviewers), you know how cumbersome it is to backup and restore your WhatsApp chats across Android devices.

All that may change soon as new evidence suggests that WhatsApp is working to devise a way by which users will be able to backup and restore chat history via Google Drive.

Online publication Android Police received a tip from a member of the WhatsApp translation group about new the presence of new options in the app that suggest that WhatsApp will soon get the option to backup and restore chat history from Google Drive.

According to the screenshots received by the website, the upcoming backup features would include options to backup chat history to Google Drive, restore history from Drive and choose between the ability to backup over Wi-fi and cellular networks. The translation strings also indicate that the app will display the 'last Google Drive backup' timestamp and that videos received via WhatsApp chats would not be saved in Google Drive.

Currently, WhatsApp allows Android users to backup and restore chats but needs them to manually transfer a folder from the old phone to the new one. iOS users can backup and restore chat history via iCloud.
