A fashionable trend among multi-billion tech companies is to
launch their own OS. The latest to join the fray is Tencent, the company
best known for QQ and WeChat, which updated its TencentOS with a
version to run on smartwatches, TV sets, VR headsets, game consoles and
other Internet-connected devices.
Huawei, ZTE, Lenovo and Qualcomm have partnered with Tencent to work on TOS+ devices.
TencentOS+ will offer low-level Internet connectivity, data syncing with a Tencent account, voice commands, money processing and other features. COO Ren Yuxin said that Tencent will not directly manufacture devices.
TencentOS also has a version for smartphone and is only one of many alt-OSes to come out of China. Xiaomi has MIUI, Meizu has Flyme, Oppo has Color OS, Alibaba has YunOS, all of those are based on Android. It’s not clear what TOS+ is based on though, there’s no mention of Android.
