Google launches password manager for Android and Chrome

 

Google has launched a password manager for Android and Chrome called Smart Lock for Passwords. While the feature was not showcased during the Google I/O keynote session, it has been listed on Google's developer pages under Google Identity Platform.

According to Google, with Smart Lock for Passwords,users will be able to sign-in and sign-up into apps on Android and sites in Chrome in a frictionless manner with any account. Users will get automatically signed-in across devices.

Once users save a password to Smart Lock through an app or site on one device, they will not need to enter login credentials on all of their Chrome and Android devices for that app when signed-in with the same Google account.

This, as per Google, will reduce the risk of forgotten user passwords. Netflix, The New York Times, Instacart, Orbitz, and Eventbrite are some of the services that will support the feature. Unlike password managers like LastPass, the system will not work with all apps and developers will need to integrate the feature through Google's API.

The feature is part of Google Play services 7.5 which means users will not have to wait for the release of Android M to use it.
