Social networking giant Facebook has launched its 2G-friendly mobile app in India, its second-biggest market.
The app is available only on Android and is available for download in India at present.
The Facebook Lite app, which was announced earlier this month, is aimed for markets where internet speeds are spotty and most smartphones run 2G internet. It supports push notifications and advertisements, but does not show videos on the news feed.
Though a stripped down version of the standard Facebook app, the new app has a similar UI.
It even integrates the chat function of Facebook, which has been removed from the primary Facebook app last year. Users now have to install a separate Messenger app in their smartphones in order to chat with their Facebook friends.
In order to optimize data consumption, Facebook Lite allows users to select the quality of images they see on their news feed.
