Paytm plans to hire 1,900 in next 3 quarters

Paytm plans to hire 1,900 people in product engineering and operations over the next three quarters and take its total headcount to 5,000 by end-March, as it gets ready for the next bout of expansion. As much as two-thirds of the planned hiring will be in operations and the rest in product engineering, said Amit Sinha, vice president, business and people, at the Noida-based online retailer and payment company.

A lot of its recent hiring had been on the sales side. Flush with funds from foreign investors, and with competition intensifying by the day, e-commerce companies are splurging on improving products and services. A lot of this investment goes into building engineering teams, which develop new products. Paytm's bigger rival Snapdeal recently said that it would double its engineering team to 2,000 by the end this financial year.

To accommodate the rising workforce, Paytm is setting up new office space in Noida. "We have two new office setups coming up with 3,000 seats (one with a seating capacity for 1,700 and the other for 1,300)," Sinha said. "Part of the facility has been operational ... the new sites would be fully operational by August." The new office will have a day-care facility to help staff with small kids, another trend in the e-commerce segment where companies are facing huge attrition and want to make themselves attractive to work with.

Flipkart was in news recently for extending elaborative maternity and paternity benefits to its employees. Paytm has recently opened an office in Toronto, Canada, and is also looking to hire people from Silicon Valley for the overseas facility. "We have been talking to some people and we would definitely hire someone from Silicon Valley," said Sinha. The current team in Toronto has 16 members, comprising primarily data scientists and technology hotshots.
