Motorola no more Flipkart-only, goes offline too

After hitch-hiking with Flipkart for over 18 months, Motorola has decided to start selling its devices from rival platforms such as Snapdeal and Amazon, while also tapping into the offline business with large-format stores such as Reliance Retail as well as Airtel-branded stores.
Sales from the new channels will start from Friday and Motorola will begin the offline business from metro and large-sized cities, Amit Boni, general manager for Motorola's India operations, told here.

"Motorola has been growing strongly in India and time has now come for us to expand our sales and distribution through new partners," he said."There was lot of customer feedback. We need more touch points, more stores." Motorola, now owned by China's Lenovo, made a comeback into the Indian market in February last year in partnership with homegrown online retail giant Flipkart. The online-only exclusive partnership with Flipkart was seen as successful for the company which managed to sell around 5.7 million devices till date through mainline models such as Moto E, Moto G and Moto X that retail from around Rs 6,000 to Rs 20,000.

The company has tied up with US distribution major Brightstar (which sells Apple devices in India and has a 51% equity in Sunil Bharti Mittal's Beetle Teletech) to tap into large retail stores. Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Retail has been confirmed as one of the major partners while Bharti Airtel's mobile stores will also sell the devices. Talks are on with other retail companies such as Chroma.
