Soon, train travellers can e-order food before hopping on

Bored of the limited menu in trains? Soon, you can please your palete with the meal of your choice without having to bring food from home. Travellers can order food before getting on board, picking from a variety of cuisines.

Online food aggregator Foodpanda and the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) are joining hands to enable consumers to order meals at least two hours before travel. The pilot will be launched at the New Delhi Railway Station and extended to cities like Bengaluru, Mumbai, Pune and Chennai in due course of time.

To ensure that the food reaches consumers in the best condition, Foodpanda will deploy its own delivery fleet. The delivery will be synced with the train arrival time and consumers can either pay online or make a cash payment on the spot.

Foodpanda CEO Saurabh Kochhar said in a statement, "Foodpanda has an innovative business model which caters to an important consumer need. Our association with IRCTC will be an offering which addresses a huge consumer need prevailing for years."

Kochhar pointed out that for long, consumers have had to make do with limited food options while travelling with Indian Railways. However, the newly-launched e-catering service by IRCTC, which has been approved by the ministry of railways, is set to change the way Indians eat while travelling.

IRCTC has been trying to provide the best facilities to its passengers, said Robin Kalita, director, catering services, IRCTC. "Food forms a very important part of the travel experience and IRCTC takes immense care to offer healthy and hygienic food to its passengers. With time, we aim to offer wider choices to our consumers and are happy that this association will take us one step closer to the goal," he said.
