Canon EOS M10 mirrorless camera review: The handy DSLR for photography enthusiasts

This is the day and age when compact cameras are not just convenient but practical as well. Photography enthusiasts who want a convenient replacement for their bulky DSLRs and something that provides similar options, but is much smaller, can pick a up a mirrorless camera. We got to play around with the Canon EOS M10, which is a mirrorless DSLR camera that comes with an APS-C sensor to play around with. Let's take a closer look at the device and what it is all about.

Design and look

The Canon EOS M10 has a very compact body for a DSLR that is smaller than the palm. The camera comes with a 15-45mm kit lens that can be locked in when not in use, which contracts it to an even smaller size. The lens release button is on the front of the camera and the Li-ion battery is accessed from a bottom panel.

The top panel of the Canon EOS M10 has the shoot and record button along with the focal length ring. It also has the power button and the mode selector. The camera has three modes, consisting of still, video and auto. The left side panel has the flash release slider, which pops the flash from the top of the camera. The flash release slider is accompanied by HDMI and the SD card slot.

The back panel has the 3-inch touchscreen LCD, which can be flipped to view from the front making the camera ideal for taking selfies. The LCD screen is accompanied by the control buttons and the mobile device connect button is on the right panel.

The Canon EOS M10 has a plastic body with a matte finish and yet has a very sturdy feel. The camera weighs 301 grams that is a testimony to how snugly built this petite camera is.

Performance and image quality

On to the fun the fun part, when using the Canon EOS M10 with the 15-45mm kit lens, we did not find it to be as snappy as we had expected. But, the 18.0 Megapixel CMOS (APS-C) sensor does a great job at capturing the right colours, even in low light (without flash). The only hindrance we faced while shooting was that the focus became a little soft and right clarity was hard to achieve in manual mode. But this can easily be avoided by using the lenses auto focus option.

The Canon EOS M10 camera can shoot large RAW images at ISOs ranging from 100-12800 and shutter speeds of 1/4000sec to 30sec. The camera offers 3.5 stops of optical image stabilization, which helps with the lower shutter speeds to get steadier shots.

The Canon EOS M10 shoots 25 FPS HD 1080p videos that adjusts to different tones of light and adapts fast to such environments. We found the videos to be close to life and sharp. The large touchscreen aids video recording a lot and we were able to squeeze some great videos (both indoors and outdoors).

Verdict

The Canon EOS M10 is a well rounded camera for a beginner that tries to adapt to a world that is dominated by phone cameras. It has DSLR-like features but in a compact size. It has the ideal arrangement of features and picture quality one requires from a mirrorless DSLR. But in hindsight, the price tag of Rs 39,095 makes the camera slightly overpriced because there are various full sized DSLR available in this price range, which offer a wider variety of features (with a touchscreen).
