Huawei Honor 5X first impressions

Chinese smartphone maker Huawei has launched its Honor 5X in India. Launched last year in China, the device has been priced at Rs 12,999 for the Indian market. We spent some time with the phone to find out what it's like and here are our first impressions of it:

Design
The Huawei Honor 5X smartphone comes with metal unibody design that exudes a premium feel. The front panel comes with a 5MP front camera with the sensor array and speaker grille on top. It comes with on screen navigation keys.

At the back, users get a 13MP rear camera and a fingerprint sensor in the centre along with Honor branding at the bottom. The right edge of the smartphone features a volume rocker and lock key. The 3.5mm headset jack is placed at the top edge, while the micro USB port is at the bottom, along with two sound outlets.

Overall, at 151.3x76.3x8.2mm and 158g, the smartphone feels solid and durable.

Display
The Huawei Honor 5X smartphone comes with a 5.5-inch display with Full HD display with 1080p resolution and 401ppi. In our brief time with the smartphone, we didn't notice any pixilation and the display was very responsive. It offers vibrant colours and has decent viewing angles.

Hardware
The Huawei Honor 5X smartphone is powered by a 64-bit octa-core Snapdragon 616 processor coupled with 2GB RAM. The smartphone comes with 16GB internal storage and users have the option of expanding the available storage by installing microSD cards of up to 128GB.

The smartphone packs a 3,000mAh battery and comes with 4G LTE, 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS connectivity options.

Software
Huawei Honor 5X runs on Android 5.1 Lollipop operating system with company's EMUI 3.1 Lite out of the box, but it will get an update to Android 6.0 Marshmallow soon.

The device doesn't have an app drawer, just like other Huawei phones. It comes with the fingerprint sensor 2.0 that can be used for various functions such as taking pictures, answering calls and stopping alarm.

The smartphone also comes with a number of preloaded apps like Facebook Facebook Messenger and Instagram, which can be uninstalled easily.

Camera
The Huawei Honor 5X smartphone comes with 13MP rear camera with f/2.0 aperture and 28mm wide angle lens. The company has used SmartImage 3.0 image processor for better image quality. The front has a 5MP camera featuring f/2.2 aperture with 22mm wide angle lens. In our brief time, the camera captured decent indoor images with good colour reproduction. However we did notice some noise in images.

What we think
Huawei Honor 5X is a pretty decent device with no major hiccups. It offered smooth performance in our limited time with the smartphone. However, for a more clear verdict, you'll have to wait for our review.
