LeEco Max smartphone review: High on specs

LeEco launched the Max smartphone when it was Letv. The Chinese company's flagship smartphone is its first offering to the Indian market. The device packs some of the most competitive specs, including a 6.33-inch screen, 21MP rear camera, fingerprint sensor, 2K display and more.

We reviewed the LeEco Max smartphone to see whether it will create a mark in the Indian smartphone market or will fade away as another Chinese smartphone. Read through to find out what we thought of this device.

Design

The LeEco Max smartphone exudes a premium feel thanks to the aluminium frame. It features a whopping 6.33-inch screen with back-lit capacitive touch navigation keys. It also houses a 4MP front camera with the sensor array and speaker grille on top.

The device comes with a soft metallic back texture that houses the 21MP rear camera along with dual-LED lights. The fingerprint sensor is also at the back, slightly recessed just below the camera. The Letv branding is towards the bottom on the same side.

The power button and the sim card tray are placed on the right while the volume rocker and mute keys sit on the left. The 3.5mm headset jack is placed at the top, while the micro-USB port along with the speaker is placed at the bottom edges.

The LeEco Max smartphone comes with a unibody design and is without a doubt one the best looking smartphones we have seen. With the massive screen size, it is indeed a big phone, which makes it difficult for one hand operations from time to time.

Display and camera

The LeEco Max smartphone has a 6.33-inch Quad HD display that sports a resolution of 2,560x1,440p with a pixel density of 464ppi built on extremely thin bezels. The company claims that the smartphone has 'the narrowest' bezels in the world at just 1.6mm.

The handset comes with different color modes -- such as vivid, Natural, soft - to choose from. In our experience, the display of the smartphones comes with excellent viewing angles with sharp colours and good sunlight legibility.

Coming to the cameras, the LeEco Max smartphones comes with a 21MP rear camera with the Sony IMX230 Sensor, OIS, f/2.0 aperture and ISP support. It features a 4MP front camera from OmniVision (OV4688 sensor) with a 81.6-degree wide-angle lens.

The camera app comes with features such as HDR and Panorama among others. Other software features of the smartphone's camera app include Face Beauty for better selfies. The images captured by the rear camera offered great detail, reproduce accurate colours and minimise noise in artificial and low-light conditions.

The front camera also does a decent job of taking selfies. The beauty mode enhances facial features to give you a flawless look.

The phone is capable of recording video in 4K and the quality of the output was excellent with good level of detail and enhanced, stereo sound. Overall, the smartphone comes with a very competitive camera.

Hardware and performance

The key specs of the phone include:

Memory: 64GB non-expandable
OS: Android OS, v5.1 (Lollipop) with the EUI (Eco User Interface) skinning
CPU: 2.0 GHz octa-core Snapdragon 810 chipset
GPU: Adreno 430
RAM: 4GB RAM
Connectivity options: 4G, 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth v4.0, GPS, USB Type C

Thanks to all the power under the hood, we did not notice any stutter or lag while launching and switching between apps, editing photos, browsing the web, clicking pictures, watching high definition videos or playing graphics-heavy games.

We were able to play videos of popular file formats without any hiccups. Additional file formats can be played through third party video player apps. The sound output through the phone's speaker outlet was also loud and clear.

Call quality was very good and the phone works well even in weak signal areas. The phone was able to lock to GPS quite easily, too.

Like many others in this price segment, the LeEco smartphone also comes with a fingerprint sensor, which we found to be extremely responsive. The phone has a USB Type C connector so you'll need to carry the cable along as this connector is not very common at the moment.

The LeEco Max smartphone offers good gaming performance, too. We were able to play games like Asphalt 8 and free flow without encountering frame drops or freezes or heating issues.

Overall, the smartphone fairs well on the performance front.

Verdict

At a price of Rs 32,999, LeEco smartphone is no doubt an excellent phone. It delivers very good overall performance. The mobile comes with sharp display, great camera, good built and decent battery backup. Speaking about the battery, the smartphone packs a non-removable 3,400mAh battery. LeEco Max offers battery life of almost a day with moderate usage. This may differ depending on usage and the apps used.
