Chinese
smartphone maker Xiaomi finally announced its flagship smartphone Mi 5
at an exclusive event in Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona,
Spain. The smartphone has been under speculations for months now. Xiaomi
VP Hugo Barra said that the all-new Xiaomi phone Mi 5 has lots to
offer, however, several tech enthusiast are not convinced.
Of course, the new Mi 5 -- if launched around Rs 20,000 in India -- will
offer a lot of value. However, there is no feature in the flagship that
we haven't seen in the smartphones already available in the market.
May be the expectations were simply too high or the fact that its rival
LeEco is already waiting to launch its Qualcomm Snapdragon 820-powered
Le Max Pro in the Indian market at a similar price.
So, here is all that's new in Xiaomi Mi 5 and why it fails to excite us.
Design
The
new Xiaomi Mi 5's design seems inspired from Mi Note Pro, which was
only launched in China. So, the design surely may attract buyers in
India. However, at the same time, the device also resembles Samsung
Galaxy Note 5 and a bit like iPhone 6S Plus. Xiaomi has introduced a
home button with an integrated fingerprint scanner at the front, similar
to some Samsung phones.
Also, the Mi 5 Pro features a ceramic body. While the company might have
enough to boast about it, ceramic body is nothing new. Its rival
OnePlus is already offering it.

Display
Xiaomi
phones have traditionally offered a better display than what most
competitors offer for the same price. And Mi 5 appears to be no
different. However, a 5.1-inch Full HD display with an almost bezel-less
look powered by its sunlight display technology again is not something
new.
Hardware
Before
Xiaomi could even boast the prowess of Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 820
processor, its competitor LeEco announced its Le Max Pro smartphone
powered with the same processor. The Mi 5 comes in two internal storage
options: 32GB (3GB RAM) and 64GB (4GB RAM). The Mi 5 Pro offers 4GB RAM,
128GB internal storage and offers a ceramic body. There is no microSD
card slot.
All the three variants are powered by a 3,000mAh battery with support
for Quick Charge 3.0 and USB Type-C port. Xiaomi has introduced NFC too.
It is a dual-SIM smartphone with support for 4G+ and VoLTE powered by
Qualcomm’s X12 LTE modem.
Android Marshmallow-powered MIUI 7
The
Mi 5 is the first Xiaomi smartphone to feature Android Marshmallow.
However, there is nothing new, thanks to MIUI 7. The UI was introduced
in India last year at a grand event. The company has already rolled out
the MIUI 7 update to all Xiaomi phones in India, except Mi 4i. So, in
the Mi 5, there is nothing new to look forward to for those who are
already familiar with MIUI 7.
Camera
Like most Xiaomi smartphones, Mi 5 too offers one of the best possible camera for the price (it is likely to be launched at).
It's the first to introduce 4-axis optical image stabilization. But
then, almost every Xiaomi smartphone boasts of having a superior camera.
So, making the camera quality as a primary USP is nothing new
