Chinese
smartphone maker Lenovo is known for its Yoga series of laptops. The
company recently launched the Lenovo Yoga 900 at a price tag of Rs
1,22,090. It flaunts a similar design as its predecessor Yoga 3 Pro.
However, it also incorporates certain key improvements under the hood. It is the slimmest hybrid in the market and claims to deliver excellent performance with long lasting battery life. Could this be your next pick running on Windows 10? Read the rest of the review and find out.
Design and display
Lenovo Yoga series of laptops are known for their 360-degree hinge design made to enhance the user experience. The Lenovo Yoga 900 features watchband hinge points that join the keyboard with the screen. The hinge enables the user to swivel Lenovo Yoga 900 into different positions.
The bigger battery of Lenovo Yoga 900 makes it slightly bulkier and thicker as compared to its predecessor Yoga 3 Pro. The device flaunts metal finish and comes in Champagne Gold colour option. Looking at the design, we can say that this laptop has got all the premium looks one wants.
The hybrid laptop offers a good amount of connectivity ports as well. You get two USB 3.0 ports, a USB-C port and a power connector, which can also be used as USB 2.0 port. Along with this, you also get a SD card slot and the usual audio 3.5mm port. Lenovo Yoga 900 does not offer an HDMI port, which might be a turn-off for some.
The Lenovo Yoga 900 features a 13.3-inch display with 3200x1800 pixels resolution. The display offers vibrant and natural colours with decent viewing angles. The touchscreen is also responsive. However, we faced some issues with the level of brightness. The laptop randomly adjusts the brightness of the screen, which turns out to be a distraction for the user. Despite offering sharp colours, we noticed that the blacks appeared to be greyish in low light conditions.
Performance
The Lenovo Yoga 900 runs on Windows 10 that functions extremely well. The operating system offers the ability to work in both tablet and laptop modes. You can easily switch between the modes according to your convenience. As soon as you rotate the screen past the 90 degree angle, the OS will transfer itself into the tablet mode.
On the software front, all the programs on Lenovo Yoga 900 ran efficiently without any hiccups. The laptop also comes with some Lenovo branded bloatware incorporating the Photo Master, Lenovo Companion, Settings, SHAREit, Lenovo ID, OneKey Recovery and REACHit. However, the programs did not interrupt work. A message or two occasionally pops up.
The laptop is powered by Core i5-6200U processor with 8GB RAM. Over that, the user also has the choice of getting a 256GB or 512GB SSD in the Lenovo Yoga 900.
We reviewed the i5 version with 8GB RAM. It also comes equipped with an Intel HD Graphics 520 that is good enough for the average user. The laptop scored well in PCMark with the score of 2,403 points.
All-in-all the Lenovo Yoga 900 works well and handles all the tasks thrown at it nicely. It is also capable of multitasking. However, the gamers will be a bit disappointed as graphic hungry games would not work on it properly. The Chinese manufacturer also states that it has incorporated the new metal-alloy fan, which is 66% more efficient in cooling. Thanks to which we did not face any heating issues. Skipping over to the cameras, the laptop offers 1MP front facing snapper to facilitate video calling. The camera is not that great, and it produces blurry images with a high amount of noise, but is fine for Skype calls. However, we would have liked a better camera considering the price of the device.
On the audio front, the Lenovo Yoga 900 comes with JBL stereo speakers powered by Dolby DS and Home Theatre certification. The sound was excellent rich with a heavy bass and no distortion at the highest volume.
The laptop packs a four-cell Lithium-ion battery that lasts for nine hours on a single charge which is pretty decent. Moreover, the battery takes approx. two and a half hours to be fully charged from zero.
Keyboard and trackpad
The Lenovo Yoga 900 comprises of a faux-leather finish on the area surrounding the keyboard. This prevents the device from slipping off the table when being used in the tablet mode. Also, it further enhances the looks of the device.
The hybrid laptop offers a backlit keyboard with a dedicated row of function keys. The keys come with rounded bottom edges and feature Lenovo's standard U-shaped design. The keyboard is user-friendly and robust. As soon as you start using the device in the tablet mode the keyboard locks up so that it does not register any rear key presses. The tablet mode is also a bit of a downer, as you end up pressing a lot of keys. Yes the key presses do not register, but the tactile feel of a tablet is compromised.
The laptop comes with a buttonless trackpad that is great to work with on most occasions. However, sometimes you have to tap twice as it does not register in the first click. Put together, the keyboard and the trackpad are a good duo to manage things.
Verdict
The Lenovo Yoga 900 is a good proposition in many ways. It flaunts good looks and feels great. The device performs well and also delivers pretty decent battery backup. The 13-inch display is good enough to be used in both tablet and desktop mode with the weight being kept to a minimum. All this is good, but the classy hybrid comes with a hefty price tag of Rs 1,22,090 which can burn a hole in your pocket and does not justify the specs.
However, it also incorporates certain key improvements under the hood. It is the slimmest hybrid in the market and claims to deliver excellent performance with long lasting battery life. Could this be your next pick running on Windows 10? Read the rest of the review and find out.
