Gionee S6s first impressions: For better selfies

Gionee has just launched its selfie-centric smartphone - S6s, in India, Priced at Rs 17,999, the smartphone has an 8MP front-facing camera with LED flash. It boasts a stylish metallic design and promises to make users' photography experience a true delight. The S6s will likely give tough competition to the recently launched Oppo F1s, which is also a selfie-centric smartphone.

We spent some time with the Gionee S6s and here are our first impressions.

Design

In our opinion, the metallic unibody design of the S6s is definitely impressive. Despite having a 5.5-inch display, the phone is surprisingly comfortable to use with one hand. The matte finished body offers a sturdy grip. The power button and volume rocker are placed on the right side, while the sim card tray is on the left. As for the bottom, this is where the 3.5mm audio jack and microUSB port are located. The rear of the smartphone houses a 13MP camera with LED flash, as well as a circular fingerprint sensor and the refreshed Gionee logo. The front is largely dominated by the display, above which sit the 8MP selfie-shooter, LED flash, earpiece and the usual array of sensors. Below the display are three capactivie navigation buttons.

Display

Gionee S6s features a 5.5-inch Full HD display of 1080x1920 pixel resolution. The display is sharp vibrant and offers fairly good colour reproduction. Viewing angles are fine and the large display makes for a good media consumption experience. Sunlight visibility is also good.

Hardware

Coming to the specifications, Gionee S6s is powered by an octa-core MediaTek processor clocked at 1.3GHz. It also has 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage, which can be expanded up to 128GB via microSD cards. That said, the phone has a hybrid dual-sim slot, so users have to choose between dual-sim functionality and expandable storage.

Although we used the S6s for only a limited amount of time, we experienced the device getting a bit hot after moderate usage and gaming, likely because of its all-metal body. Other than that, the S6s handled everything from app switching to light gaming without any issues.

Software

Gionee S6s runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow , topped with the company's Amigo UI layer. The user interface is pretty clean and easy to use. There is no app drawer, which means all the apps are there on the homescreen. The device comes with some pre-loaded apps like Truecaller, Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp and Instagram.

Camera

Talking about the camera, the Gionee S6s is equipped with a 13MP rear camera with dual LED flash and a 8MP front camera with LED flash. During our limited time usage, we found the camera to be alright. It produces decent looking shots in normal lighting conditions. Colour reproduction is really good and the beautification feature further enhances selfies. The camera app offers various modes and filters to make things even better.

What we think

Gionee S6s is an appreciably good attempt from the Chinese manufacturer to woo the all the selfie lovers out there. It offers a well-rounded set of specifications and looks really good. But to know whether that makes it a good buy or not, you'll have to wait for our detailed review.
